About this deal

Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced in years of exceptional quality and represent only a very small part of the total company’s production in that year. Aged for an average of three years it is bottled when ready to drink and requires no further ageing. In the 1920’s, the celebrated Oxford Professor George Saintsbury underlined Dow’s outstanding reputation when he wrote in his famous ‘Notes on a Cellarbook’ (first published in 1920), “There is no shipper’s wine that I have found better than the best of Dow’s 1878 and 1890 especially.

Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port shows a lovely bouquet of red fruits and spicy aromas and the palate is full of jammy red fruit and notes of spices, mint and chocolate. Generations of Symington winemakers have worked at the Dow's vineyards: Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, creating from them Dow's superbly concentrated wines that are intense and tannic when young, maturing towards a superlative racy elegance with age and scented with violet and mint aromas. The Symingtons opted to devise a mechanical means of replicating the proven method of foot treading. Nowhere has this investment been more in evidence than in the quality of Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage Ports (LBV).

The classic Dow’s dry finish is always present in the house’s LBV; it is one of the finest LBV Ports available. On the palate, it offers a velvety texture, with flavors of black fruits, figs and raisins, supported by tannins that give it structure and a delightful finish. This 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Dow's is "very inky in hue, this is very tight indeed, with classic Dow dryness/austerity – firm tannins and a yet to be mined concentrated seam of minerals, black currant, berry and cherry. In the years in which Dow's does not declare a Vintage, the best ports are bottled under this Bomfim label. The Symington family brings the legacy of creating intense and tannic concentrated wines with the DOW wines, which age elegantly and are scented with mint and violet aromas.

The 2015 Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port was produced from one co-fermented lagar of Touriga Franca and Sousão (0. Port and cheese night taken to a new level with this beauty… Great legs, complex aromas of jam, figs, cherries and blackberry, raisin and chocolate…. Racking is the process by which the Dow’s team of experienced lodge men will carefully draw the wine off its ‘lees’ (the natural sediment that is formed at the bottom of the cask) and then pour the wine back into the clean cask.

In September 2006, Jancis Robinson MW wrote, “One very exciting new bottling is Dow’s Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2004. The exceptionally aromatic nose has aromas of violets and jammy red fruits such as cherries and redcurrants. A rain affected start to the season, coupled with hail, reduced yields to very small levels in 2018. A superb port from a top, top vintage which has certainly continued to improve over the last forty nine years. Although individual vintage reports are still being written, some key vintages of the past 40 years have region-specific reports.
